  CREATING A CULTURAL HUB

It is the cultural composite facility centering on the library being built in the center of Gifu city.

The planned site is the place where people can look up at the symbol of the city - Mt.Kinkazan and Gifu castle at the top of the mountain and that is 2 km away from the JR Gifu station. Moreover, located on the bank of Nagara River known for domesticating cormorants and with the rich groundwater resources, the site is a land for construction characterized with the obvious geomorphic features.

It is a land with the area of about 30,000 sq.m left during the integral moving of School of Medicine of Gifu University, the land use rightis obtained by Gifu city, the experts and citizens have discussed the land use for about ten years, and the final decision is to build thecomposite facilities and new administrative facilities centering on the city central library and a lively recreational square for the citizens. The purpose is to rejuvenate Gifu city which has lost the past momentum due to the recession of the textile industry by building the arearegarded as the administration center before into the “cultural Hub” of new era. In order to realize this conception, the first phase of the project was in form of competition, and our design came first in February 2011.

  SIMPLE 2-STOREY COMPOSITION

In consideration of the surrounding layout, the building is designed with 2 storeys on the ground, and only the corresponding mechanical operation and control room is arranged under the ground due to the influence of groundwater. The open-shelf reading area is arranged onthe second floor and other facilities are set on the ground floor, which makes the 2-storey structure simple and clear.

By doing this, the plane with the area of 80m x 90m is formed, and by the transparent and wide-vision design, the visiting people can see the various activities being conducted by other people, they influence each other and the dynamic effects may be realized.

In addition, the entrances are respectively arranged in the north, south, west and east on the ground floor, through which, even without any target, people can wander aimlessly like shopping, and may know some new things and information.

  BOOK STACK (1ST FLOOR)

The central part of the first floor is far away from the exterior wall and is a quiet place. The closed-book stack (library) which can accommodate 600 thousand books is arranged at the heart of the first floor plan. The closed-book stack is always arranged under theground or at the back of a conventional library, the stack room set in the center of the first floor makes people feel the rich knowledgefrom any direction on the first floor.

Around the “book stack”, the exhibition media and multi-function hall are arranged in the east, the spacious antechamber and dining hallare arranged in the south, the activity and communication center is arranged in the west, the office area is arranged in the north, and the four parts are linked closely and harmoniously.

  “GLOBE”(二层)

  GLOBE (2ND FLOOR)

Walking to the second floor along the direction line in the middle of ventilation space in the frist floor, you may realize that the entire second floor is an open reading area without partition walls, large enough to contain 300 thousand books. The children’s books and the grown-up’s books are placed beside each other with the intention that the children may follow the grown-ups’ example and the grown-upsmay be propelled by the children.

The second floor is characterized by a total of 11 globes that are 8m~14m inverted funnel shaped combination of polyester fabrics and nonwoven fabrics.

The special shape of the globes together with the vents above the globes helps promote the air flow and provide ventilation of the living area without using mechanical apparatus. Moreover, the light coming through the skylight may gently spread over the room, creating sufficient light no matter it is sunny or cloudy.

The reading area is under the globes with both most comfortable circumstances of temperature and light, the globes are surrounded by book shelves, which are placed in a vortex form and are labeled to indicate the category of the books, different category of books arecollected under different globes.

The books shelves are 1,450mm tall from the floor, and the bottom of the globes is 2,400 mm tall from the floor, such a height may enable a clear view at all corners.

  WOOD ROOFING

The roofing features wave-form upheavals above the globes to match the surrounding mountains as well as to improve the ventilation condition of the globes, while providing a sense of dynamic space to the readers.

Such structure is made of 120mm×20mm wood of municipal common dimension (Gifu cypress), softened at the lumbering site, and laid in three directions. There are 21 layers to the maximum, the upper part of the wave-from upheaval is laminated by 9 layers of wood andshows gradient changes in light of the stress.

  ENERGY EFFICIENCY 1/2

The target proposed is to save 1/2 of energy consumption of the structure with regard to 1990 same-scale structures proposed in Kyoto Protocol.

The budget will have a 16.1% reduction by taking advantage of the ventilation effect of the globes, as well as the effective combined use of ground radiation heating and cooling equipment, heat source of underground water, solar energy (heat collection panel) and the dry airconditioner.

In addition, the light effusion effect of the globes and energy efficiency of other lighting may help result in 18.8% off of the budget, the solar energy generation may bring about a 5.1% off, the highly-efficient curtains may bring out a 2.0% off, it is therefore confirmed in the design stage that the target may be realized.

Furthermore, the design sets the “felt air temperature”, that is, the combined consideration of air temperature, humidity, radiating

temperature, wind speed, etc. as the indicator to evaluate the comfort and energy efficiency.

  FOREST PLANTATION (LANDSCAPE DESIGN)

Though Mt Kinkazan gives visitors a green impression, there no much green around the building area. Therefore, it is planed more trees be planted to make the building area live up to the honor of a forest area and have better greening effect.

A 200m avenue is planned to be constructed at the west side of the buildings. The avenue will be 6 rows of avenues formed mainly by cassia trees, and the centerline formed thereof shall link to the shopping street of the city and extend to the station ahead of the shopping street, which is expected to form the new urban centerline.

Furthermore, the “stream” will be constructed in the avenue by making use of the underground water of Nagara River, except for being used for the buildings, the underground water is also designed to be used to water trees, the water will then seep into the ground and return to its original source. A 45m-wide green civil square is also planned to be constructed in the middle of the public facilities that arereserved for Phase II project.

  FOREST-FOR-ALL

In the design stage, the public were invited to name the building, and eventually the name of “‘Minna-no-Mori (Forest-for-All)’,mediacosmos” was chosen. This is because that the construction involves great tree-planting and forest plantation, in the other sense, there are a forest of multiple-function faculties where we gather, grow up and transmit information; such a name is full of expectations.

Our aim is to build the energy-efficient public facilities providing you intimacy, warmth, comfort of the nature while giving you a combined feeling of a new era. The construction has been started since summer 2013, and it is predicated the buildings will be open in 2015.
