Architecture must meet a double expectation： to be beautiful and to be useful. In today‘s world， the architectmust integrate esthetic， technical， economic， environmental and social issues into their projects.
When the architect is given the task of accomplishing major architectural projects set forth by his governors，the architect becomes a driving force of culture. It is to the great Chinese collector and antique dealer， C.T.Loo， that Paris owes its pagoda， built in 1926. After he initially acquired a French hotel particulier in theeighth district， C.T. Loo understood that it was necessary to construct a building inspired by China to househis Chinese collections and spread the culture of his country. Today， while contemplating this great pagoda，Parisians have the chance to dream of China without having to leave their city.
In 1997， President Jacques Chirac began a welcoming， an exchange， and a training program entitled， “Onehundred and fifty Chinese architects in France.” It is rare that an exchanging and hosting program has beenmore fruitful. The National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing and the Shanghai Pudong InternationalAirport， two major achievements from Paul Andreu’s work in China， are the fruits of these exchanges.I am particularly enthusiastic about the initiative taken by ArchiCreation， under the impetus of Ms. WangShuzhan and Diana Chen Chieng， to devote this special edition to French architecture on the occasionof the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People‘s Republic ofChina and France. This is not just a retrospective view of architectural achievements， reviewing well-knownbuildings and internationally renowned architects. This edition goes further， shedding light on innovativeartists who have not hesitated to step outside the comforts of conformity to let their imaginations and theircreative powers run freely.
This edition is a genuine tribute to the French architecture and， during this year in which we celebrate our50-year relationship， it is a beautiful illustration of the cooperation between our two countries.
