In late January when the Chinese people wereabout to celebrate the 2020 Spring Festival, the most important traditional festival for allChinese people worldwide, bad news camein the form of the novel coronavirus. The virus, which emerged in December last year in Wuhan, central China’s Hubei Province, spread quicklyamong people, causing a deadly disease namedlater by the World Health Organization (WHO)as COVID-19. Overnight, people in China wereseen with protective masks outside, while mostremained indoors.
But masks cannot cover up people’s strongdetermination of fighting against the epidemic.
China immediately launched its emergencyresponse system and reported the outbreakto the WHO and the global community. OnJanuary 25, the day of the Spring Festival,Chinese President Xi Jinping presided over animportant meeting to deploy and mobilize anationwide campaign.
Resources were quickly mobilized to preventthe epidemic from spreading in China and globally. As of February 13, more than 21,000 medicalworkers have been mobilized to fight thevirus in Hubei. Along with the medical teams, all the necessary medical materials and supplieswere transported to the province daily.
Facing the rapid increase in the number ofvirus patients in Wuhan, more hospitals wereneeded to quarantine and treat them. Withinonly 10 days, Huoshenshan Hospital, coveringa construction area of 33,900 square meterswith 1,000 beds, was completed from designto construction. Leishenshan Hospital, anotherspecialized hospital for COVID-19 patients with1,600 beds, also came into service on February 8.
Solidarity can be seen not only within China, but also in the global community. China hasnot been alone in its hour of need, with manycountries offering a helping hand.
In a communiqué issued by the 36th OrdinarySession of the Executive Council of the AfricanUnion (AU) in Addis Ababa on February 7, ministersof foreign affairs of the AU membersexpressed their solidarity with the governmentand people of China in their efforts to counterthe spread of the new virus and to cope withits health and social ramifications.
Sources from China’s Ministry of ForeignAffairs revealed that as of February 14, Africancountries such as Algeria, Ghana and Egypt havedonated medical materials to China for epidemicprevention and control. In addition, Kenyaand the Republic of the Congo also announceddonations of medical supplies.
The age old saying, a friend in need is a friendindeed, is profoundly true in this scenario. Inthe joint effort to fight a common enemy of allhuman beings, the friendship between Chinaand various countries will be further strengthened.
In the global village in which we live, thefates of all countries are closely connected. Wedo believe that with the joint efforts of all thepeople, the day of victory over the virus is notfar away.
