The 84-year-old Chinese agricultural scientist andeducator Yuan Longping was nominated for the2014 Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to foodsafety in Asia.
Yuan，known as the Father of Hybrid Rice in the Chinesemedia， is known for developing the first hybrid ricevarieties back in the 1970s. These rice species yield edsignificantly more than common species at the timeand were able to withstand water shortages. Yuan’shybrid rice is now used in more than 20 countries and inover 50 percent of China’s rice fields.
Yuan is currently the director general of the ChinaNational Hybrid Rice R&D Center and a member ofthe Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has receivednumerous awards and honors for his work， includingthe 2004 World Food Prize and the 2004 Wolf Prize inAgriculture.
