Through the Years

　　A friend in need is a friend indeed.This axiom has been exemplified throughthe 50 years of friendship between Chinaand Tanzania. The two countries establisheddiplomatic relations on April 26， 1964， whenthe founding fathers of Mao Zedong andJulius Nyerere blazed the path for a halfcentury of friendly relations.

　　In the 1970s， when China was itself ineconomic difficulty， it helped Tanzaniabuild the TAZARA Railway. The 1，860-kmlongrailway later turned out to be themajor transportation artery in East Africaconnecting Tanzania with Zambia， givingsome inland countries access to thesea. The project allowed many Chinesepeople to learn about Tanzania， and Africamore broadly. Meanwhile， Tanzania greatlyaided in China’s efforts to resume its legalstatus in the United Nations， among manyother mutual-help examples.

　　Because of the strong basis of friendship，the bilateral relations between Chinaand Tanzania have been forging aheadsteadily and smoothly. Tanzanian foundingfather Nyerere visited China 13 times；Chinese leaders of several generationsalso frequently visit Tanzania， includingformer President Hu Jintao and currentPresident Xi Jinping.
