从高考试题看whatever的用法

　　摘要：whatever是英语中含义丰富，用法较为灵活的词汇之一，是高考英语试题中经常出现的考点，也是学生在学习过程中较难掌握的一个词汇。下面笔者结合历年的英语高考试题，谈谈whatever一词的用法。

　　3. The newcomer went to the library the other day andsearchedfor whatever he could find about Mark Twain. (2012，辽宁卷)

　　4. ---How about camping this weekend， just for a change？

　　---Ok， whatever you want（. 2010，浙江卷）

　　5. The poor young man is ready to accept whatever help he canget（. 2005，全国卷Ⅱ）

　　以上几道高考试题都是考查whatever，但是whatever在这些试题中的词性和用法是不一样的。在第1、2题中充当连接代词，在第3、4题中充当关系代词，在第5 题中用作形容词，并且它们的意义也不同。除此之外，whatever还有一些其他含义和用法。以下将对whatever的用法加以总结。[1]

　　一、用作代词

　　用作代词时与一般代词不一样，它同时兼有连接代词、关系代词和疑问代词的作用，用来引导名词性从句或副词性从句，或者用来加强句子的语气。

　　1.用作连接代词

　　whatever充当连接代词时，引导让步状语从句，相当于nomatter what，without considering what，意思是“无论什么”，“不管什么”，在从句中可作主语、宾语和表语。它所引导的从句可以放在主句之前，也可放在主句之后。例如：Whatever (=No matter what)happens， don’t be surprised.无论发生什么事，都别惊讶。(whatever作主语)，I won‘t tell you my secret whatever（=no matter what）youdo，.不管你做什么，我都不会把我的秘密告诉你。（whatever作宾语）[2]

　　注意：whatever引导让步状语从句时，如果从句中有may，或从句是系表结构，就可以省略从句中的may或者be动词，前面提到的第1和第2高考题都是省略了系动词is。再如：Whatever(=No matter what) the weather（is）， he sticks to walking outdoors.无论天气好坏，他总坚持到户外散步。（whatever 作表语）。

　　2.用作关系代词

　　whatever用作关系代词时，常引导主语从句和宾语从句，这时它也与一般的关系代词不同，兼有先行词和关系代词两种功能，相当于“anything /everything that…”“any that…”，在从句中充当主语、宾语、宾语补足语等成分。例如：Whatever she does is ridiculous她的所作所为都是荒谬的。(whatever 引导主语从句，在主语从句中作宾语，whatever 相当于everything that…)，Choose whatever youlike.选择你喜欢的任何东西。(whatever 引导宾语从句，在宾语从句中作宾语，whatever 相当于anything that…)，He was to do whateverhis teacher told him to do.老师教他干什么他就干什么。(whatever引导宾语从句，在宾语从句中作宾语补足语)。

　　注意：whatever用作连接代词时，与no matter what 引导的从句相似，但在语法上不能用no matter what来代替，因为no matterwhat引导的从句不能用作主语从句和宾语从句，只能作状语从句。例如：Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well.任何一件值得做的事都应该把它做好。不能换成No matter what is worthdoing at all is worth doing well.

　　3.用作疑问代

　　whatever 用作疑问代词时，常用于特殊疑问句，用来加强语气，相当于what ever， what on earth 等。例如：Whatever is the matter？这是怎么回事？Whatever can you mean？你究竟是什么意思？Whatever is all that noise？那喧闹声究竟是什么？

　　4.用作不定代词

　　whatever 用作不定代词时，用来指其他任何类似的东西，相当于“anything (else) like that…”，含有“诸如此类”之意，常用于非正式文体中。例如：They’re always protesting about something or savingthe trees or whatever.他们总是在抗议一些事情，或是在拯救树木或诸如此类的事情。He had difficulty in learning any subject-Chinese， maths ，or whatever.他学任何课程都有困难，无论是语文、数学还是其他课程。[3]

　　有时whatever也用于回答别人的建议，主要表示不感兴趣或不太在意。

　　---Shall we go to the park or go to the cinema？我们去公园还是看电影？

　　---Whatever.(=I don’t care which.) 随你的便。

　　二、用作形容词

　　whatever 作形容词时，其用法可分为三类：一类是起连接作用的连接形容词，一类是起引导作用的关系形容词，还有一类是起修饰或限定作用的形容词，在句中作定语。

　　1.用作连接形容词

　　whatever用作连接形容词主要引导让步状语从句，相当于nomatter what，意为“无论怎样…都”，这时whatever必须同其所修饰的词一起放在从句句首引导状语从句。例如：Don’t lose heartwhatever difficulties you meet. 无论遇到什么困难都不要灰心。Whatever reasons you may have，you should carry out a promise.无论你有什么样的理由，你都应当遵守诺言。[4]

　　2.用作关系形容词

　　whatever用作关系形容词时，主要用来引导主语从句和宾语从句，这时它必须和它所修饰的名词一起放在从句句首，相当于any 或all，可译为“任何的…”“全部的…”

　　Take whatever magazines you want to read.任何你想读的杂志都可以取阅。

　　President Obama offered whatever assistance Japan needs.奥巴马总统表示将提供任何日本需要的援助。

　　3.用作后置形容词

　　whatever 作为形容词独立使用，主要用在与no， any， all 连用的名词之后，作后置定语，相当于at all，意为“一点…都（不）”“任何…都（不）”例如：There can be no doubt whatever about them.有关那些事无可怀疑。Ican’t findanyonewhatever.我一个人也没找到。[5]

　　三、用作副词

　　在口语中whatever也可用作副词，用法相当于anyway，可译为“无论如何”，“任何”。例如：They told us they would back uswhatever.他们告诉我们无论如何都会支持我们。There is no evidencewhatever that competition in broadcasting has ever reducedcosts.没有任何证据证明广播行业的竞争曾经使成本降低。
